COVID came and drove the world crazy! We all can agree on the point that it has had an effect on every person in some way or the other. For many couples, it messed up their wedding plans. Chicago was hit with some of the most strict mandates across America, but couples adjusted in their own way to ensure their wedding takes place. And for that— we salute you! So, at This Is Feeling Photo and Video, we decided to do a series of 8 blog posts dedicated to such amazing couples and their stories. Lisa and Steve are one of them.

Lisa and Steve saw our work and fell in love with our documentary-style wedding photography. So they approached us with their plan of what they called an ‘unconventional wedding’. Almost everything had to be changed from their first plan to the final day. Thanks to the pandemic and related restrictions. However, with the right attitude and the right creative team, we were able to accomplish the seemingly impossible.

The best thing about Lisa and Steve was their positive energy and their nearly opposite personalities. Lisa is outgoing, totally comfortable in front of the camera, and was ready to do anything to make her wedding plans work out in 2020. Steve, on the contrary, is a quiet person. He had a constant smile on his face and is the ROCK of their relationship. Together they got through it all.

Not only did they respect the restrictions, Lisa and Steve required everyone at their wedding to get COVID tested before the wedding. They just couldn’t imagine their wedding day without all the feels and hugs of a wedding day. Honestly, we were skeptical and had no idea how this would pan out. On the wedding day, we kept our distance, wore masks, and sanitized our hands frequently. To our pleasant surprise, Lisa and Steve’s guests were completely in line with the couple’s idea of getting tested and making it work for them.

Our Thoughts on COVID Weddings

My favorite thing about couples getting married in 2020 was how little direction there was for everybody. Nobody knew what was right, nobody knew what was wrong, and there was no Pinterest boarding for small weddings. You couldn’t really find advice from planners or Instagram, or friends who’d planned weddings in the past. The total lack of information created some of the best types of weddings I’ve witnessed in my 10 years of wedding photography. They were original, intimate, and whimsical. In a weird way, we’re going to miss 2020 weddings. Because weddings like Lisa and Steve’s were simply perfect.
